211 Ugandans Evacuated from War-torn Sudan
211 Ugandans have been successfully evacuated from Sudan following clashes that began on April 15th 2023 between the regular army and a paramilitary force called the Rapid Support Forces. The evacuees, composed of diplomats, students, and business expatriates, arrived at Entebbe International Airport in Uganda from Bahir Dar Airport in Northern Ethiopia. The special evacuation operation was directed by President Yoweri Museveni and supervised by General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Senior Presidential Advisor on Special Operations
211 Ugandans living and working in the Republic of the Sudan have been successfully evacuated following clashes that broke up early this month. The evacuees arrived on Thursday 27th April 2023 at 2:00am aboard Uganda Airlines following a successful evacuation directed by President Yoweri Museveni.
On arrival, the returnees were received by General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Senior Presidential Advisor on Special Operations and the designated supervisor of the special evacuation operation, according to a communication from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The evacuees in the company of Ambassador Joseph Ocwet, Director General of ESO composed of diplomats, students, and business expatriates, arrived at Entebbe International Airport, Uganda from Bahir Dar Airport in Northern Ethiopia.
In appreciation, Rashid Yahya Ssemuddu, Uganda’s Ambassador to Khartoum said, “Allow me to appreciate His Excellency, the President and Government of Uganda for all the efforts which have been made to make sure that a number of 211 Ugandans have been evacuated today from Bahir Dar Airport in Ethiopia.”
The fighting in Sudan started on 15 April 2023 as a result of a power struggle within the country’s military leadership. The clashes are between the regular army and a paramilitary force called the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
