The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has flagged off 500 troops for deployment under the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) and the Uganda Military Training and Mentoring Team (UMTMT).

The flag-off ceremony, which took place at the International Peace Support Operations Training Centre (IPSO-TC) in Singo, Nakaseke District, was held on Tuesday.

Major General Francis Takirwa, Deputy Commander of the UPDF Land Force, addressed the troops, urging them to uphold discipline, patience, and dedication as they prepare for their mission.

He emphasized the importance of ethical conduct, cooperation with local communities, and cultural sensitivity to ensure mission success. Maj Gen Takirwa reminded the troops, “You are not citizens of that country,” and urged them to act as problem-solvers while maintaining humility, respect, and cultural awareness.

Brigadier General John Patrick Otongo, Commandant of IPSO-TC, expressed confidence in the troops’ readiness, stating, “It is my conviction that the objectives of the training have been achieved, and we therefore expect successful operations in the mission area.” He reassured the troops, saying, “You have all that it takes to perform your duties in the mission area. We wish you success in your mission and look forward to welcoming you back.”

Brig Gen Otongo also noted that the training had been conducted mainly by UPDF instructors, with support from international partners, including the Global Peace Operation Initiative, ensuring that the troops are well-equipped for their deployment.

The ceremony was attended by Battle group commanders, senior and junior officers, and other military personnel, all gathered to witness the departure of the 500 UPDF troops as they embark on their mission in Somalia.
