Police Urge Calm Amid Investigation into Bobi Wine’s Wakiso District Injuries
Police are conducting a detailed investigation to determine how Robert Kyagulanyi, aka Bobi Wine, was injured during a September 3 incident in Wakiso District. The Police stress that final conclusions will rely on medical and professional reports. Despite public criticism, the Police urge patience, as the investigation progresses.
The Police have announced their commitment to conducting a thorough medical and professional investigation to determine the cause of injuries sustained by Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, during the September 3, 2024, altercation in Wakiso District.
While addressing journalists on Wednesday at the Police headquarters in Naguru, Kampala, Police spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma emphasized that conclusions will only be drawn based on professional findings, including medical reports and comprehensive investigations.
Kituuma noted that although the Police have faced public criticism, they will maintain composure and await the completion of the investigations before making any definitive statements.
The incident occurred in Bulindo, Kira Municipality, where Kyagulanyi, the leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP), reportedly sustained a leg injury.
Kituuma also mentioned that videos circulating on social media show Kyagulanyi stumbling and what appears to be tear gas near his vehicle. However, he underscored that the Police are taking a professional approach and will not rely solely on these videos to form conclusions.
“Our internal footage shows elements of an altercation between the Police and Kyagulanyi’s group, including instances of stone-throwing and the Police’s subsequent crowd dispersal actions. However, a detailed investigation is necessary to ascertain the full context of the events,” he stated.
According to Police reports, Kyagulanyi had attended a thanksgiving ceremony at the invitation of lawyer George Musisi, and the event concluded without incident.
However, after leaving the venue, Kyagulanyi and his team initiated a procession toward Bulindo Town, despite Police advice against it, Kituuma explained.
He further stated that the Police intervened to prevent the procession from obstructing the road, which led to a confrontation.
“During the ensuing altercation, it is alleged that Kyagulanyi sustained injuries. Police officers on site claim he stumbled while getting into his vehicle, causing the injury, while Kyagulanyi and his team assert that he was shot. An investigation will be conducted to clarify the facts,” Kituuma added.
The Police also reported that three of their officers were stoned, with one sustaining serious injuries during the confrontation with Bobi Wine’s supporters. Additionally, the windshields of Police vehicles were shattered.
Shortly after the incident, video clips circulated on social media showing NUP supporters lifting Kyagulanyi into a vehicle to be taken to the hospital. These videos also appear to depict the use of tear gas near his car. However, the Police have reiterated that they will not base their conclusions solely on these social media videos and have urged the public to remain calm as the investigation proceeds.
Kyagulanyi was initially taken to Najaeem Medical Centre in Bulindo for first aid before being transferred to St. Francis Hospital, Nsambya, where he remains hospitalized.
