The Ministry of Health has initiated the €12 million Karamoja Infrastructure Development Project II (KIDP II) to upgrade healthcare facilities in the poverty-stricken Karamoja region.

Kampala, Uganda — The Ministry of Health has announced a €12 million initiative to upgrade and equip health facilities in the Karamoja region, which faces the highest poverty rate in Uganda.

Approximately 70% of families in Karamoja have inadequate access to health services due to insufficient infrastructure, a shortage of medical personnel, and limited training.

The Karamoja Infrastructure Development Project II (KIDP II), supported by a €10 million soft loan from the Italian Government and a €2 million contribution from the Government of Uganda, aims to strengthen health service delivery in the region.

The project is being implemented with the technical support of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS).

Under this initiative, the Ministry of Health will build and equip new hospitals, expand departments in existing facilities, and train medical staff.

Additionally, staff accommodations are being constructed in every district to support healthcare workers in the most remote areas.

Announcing the latest phase of the project, Dr. Diana Atwine, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, said contracts have been awarded for construction and equipping works, with completion expected within 18 months.

“This initiative aims to strengthen health service delivery in Karamoja. I have cautioned contractors to adhere strictly to timelines, financial scope, and quality standards,” Dr. Atwine said.

“Any company delivering substandard work will be blacklisted.”

The KIDP II builds on efforts to address longstanding healthcare challenges in Karamoja, where limited hospitals and under-resourced health facilities have hindered service delivery.

With the contribution of the Italian Government and the technical support of AICS, the Government of Uganda is working to bring lasting improvements to healthcare accessibility for Karamoja’s predominantly pastoralist population.

Local leaders and residents have expressed optimism that the initiative will lead to significant changes in the region
