President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has extended condolences for the loss of 23 people and the injuries of 16 on account of the landslides and directed the State House Comptroller Ms. Jane Barekye to give Shs 5 million each to the families of those who died and Shs 1 million each to those who were injured.

However, President Museveni observed that such losses of life should not be taken lightly and re-emphasized the need to strictly observe the environmental requirements to avoid such catastrophic events.

“There should be no buildings or gardens 50 meters from riverbanks (enkuungu y’Omugyera), 200 meters from the lake shore (emyegyeego y’enyaanja), and no building on hills with a gradient greater than 30 degrees,” said H.E Museveni.

President Museveni noted that forests should hold the soil and prevent the landslides because the roots of the trees hold the soil and the forests near the riverbanks and Lake shores filter the water going into the rivers or Lakes, so that they do not silt and therefore, said it is wrong to interfere with this delicate work of God and nature.

that displaced thousands of residents and destroyed properties.

The President’s message comes after heavy rains caused landslides in Kigezi Sub region and in the Rwenzori Mountains which resulted in the death of several people.

According to President, it is therefore wrong to interfere with this delicate work of God and nature.

According to the Minister of State for Children Affairs Hon Sarah Nyirabashiki Mateke, who is also the Kisoro District Woman Member of Parliament, in Murora Sub- County said about 200 households were displaced from their homes following the mudslides that hit the area. The said floods also left crops, livestock, houses, and other infrastructure such as roads destroyed.
