Government of Uganda Allocates Ugx 5 billion Grant to Benefit 5,400 Older Persons
To further improve the protection and welfare of older persons, government of Uganda has put a substantial grant of SH5 billion dedicated to supporting older persons. This grant is specifically designed for individuals aged 60 to 79 years, and it aims to improve their quality of life and provide much-needed assistance.
Government of Uganda has allocated Ugx 5 billion Grant to Benefit 5,400 older persons. This will be done through the Social Enterprise Grant for Older Persons (SEGOP), which is an alternative Government programme for older persons not covered under the Social Assistance Grant for Empowerment (SAGE).
Dominic Awabi, the state minister for elderly affairs, said the funds will be given to a total of 5,400 people, who are members of the 520 enterprise groups in different districts across the country. Each group will get a maximum of sh5m.
“Working with all stakeholders, the Government is committed to promoting healthy and dignified ageing, where all older persons in the country live elevated lives through a comprehensive social protection system,” Mafwabi said.
He said the funds will be disbursed annually, and that the fund will target new organised enterprise groups from across the country. The SEGOP fund will enable older persons to engage in income-generating activities as a group to remain productive at their old age.
Working in groups will enable them to interact more as they grow and work together and it will also enhance their social inclusion and participation, which boosts their esteem.
