Expanding the Northern Corridor, Tororo-Gulu Railway Rehabilitation
The renovation of the Tororo-Gulu meter gauge railway line in Uganda which is undertaken by China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC). The project, costing sh199 billion, is expected to take two years and aims to enhance regional freight transit and promote the oil sector. The government of Uganda fully sponsors the project, which includes the creation of an integrated transport infrastructure.
The Tororo-Gulu meter gauge railway line, which runs 382 KM, has undergone renovation, and the minister made these statements at the beginning of those efforts.
China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) has been given the redevelopment project, which would cost sh199 billion. The railway line is anticipated to enhance regional and local freight transit.
For the renovation of the line, the Uganda Railways Corporation and China Railways and Bridges signed a deal. It is projected that the building will take two years.
The Minister of Works and Transport Gen. Katumba Wamala reaffirmed the intention of the administration to launch the Standard Gauge Railway.
The governments of Kenya and Uganda have already inked a deal to make this project possible and improve connection.
Gen. Katumba emphasized that these railroad lines are intended to lower business costs and promote the oil sector. He urged the courts to impose severe punishments on anyone who damages railroad lines.
As part of their corporate social responsibility, the railway line contractors China Roads and Bridges Limited, which built the Tororo-Gulu Railway line, said they would offer five scholarships for deserving students from each of the districts the line goes through.
The resurrection of the line was long overdue, according to Waiswa Bageya, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Works and Transport, who also alerted stakeholders. He claimed that “proper compensation has now resolved land disputes that had delayed the start of the works.”
In addition, Bageya asked the Uganda Railways Corporation to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of their rail services.
China Roads and Bridges was asked by the district chairperson to to provide job opportunities to the people of Tororo.
They urged the government to start using the Standard Gauge Railway as soon as possible.
The China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) and the government of Uganda agreed on a contract in April this year for the rehabilitation of the Tororo to Gulu stretch of the meter gauge railway line.
Before arriving at the Gulu Logistics Hub (GLH), this 375-kilometer railway line travels through Mbale, Soroti, and Lira, bringing the northern corridor’s overall length to more than 700 kilometers.
The Tororo-Gulu line rehabilitation is anticipated to take 24 months, plus an additional month for the contractor to gather the required supplies, tools, and labor force.
The government of Uganda has fully sponsored this project, which aims to increase the quantity and caliber of vital infrastructure for Uganda’s competitiveness.
The project also seeks to create an integrated transport infrastructure and services in the country. Uganda still has work to do to rehabilitate the colonial-era meter gauge railway to alleviate pressure on the roads.
The main railway line from Malaba to Kampala has already been rehabilitated through an 84-billion-shilling project contracted to the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC).
