President Yoweri Museveni discussed recent rebel attacks in Uganda, emphasizing that the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) was defeated in 2007. He assured the nation that the government is addressing the new rebel threat and urges increased security measures to combat terrorism.

President Yoweri Museveni has said the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) was thoroughly defeated in 2007 and that the recent attacks where school children were murdered in Kasese were merely acts by rebels who sneaked into the country.

On June 16, 2023, the rebels attacked a secondary school in Mpondwe, Kasese district, killing over 40 people, mostly students.

Lhubirira Secondary School is located about 2kms from the Uganda-Democratic Republic of Congo border.

Museveni noted that the ADF could not operate within Uganda as a rebel force because the army totally wiped out their bases.

“The ADF was defeated long ago just before the Common Wealth Conference when they tried to infiltrate from Congo. Of 100 rebels, the Ugandan commandos in Semiliki National Park killed 83. The good news is that the Congo government has allowed us to go for them. Therefore, we shall finish these people,” Museveni says.

Museveni said planting bombs within Kampala is a miscalculation by the ADF: “The planners of the planted bombs are based in Congo and we are going for them”.

He tipped Ugandans on how to fight terrorism, saying all strangers entering churches, bars, and hotels must be thoroughly searched.

The President, who was addressed in full army combat made the remarks while addressing the country on issues of national security at the State Lodge in Nakasero in Kampala on 7^th September 2023.
