Uganda’s Heroic Efforts in Somalia Lauded by African Union Mission

The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) extends its commendation to members of the Uganda Formed Police Unit (FPU) for their steadfast dedication in executing the Mission’s mandate and fostering capacity enhancement for the Somali Police Force.
Addressing a medal parade ceremony, ATMIS Police Commissioner CP Hillary Sao Kanu lauded the Ugandan police contingent for their unwavering commitment and sacrifice in facilitating peace support operations in Somalia amidst myriad challenges.
During the vibrant event hosted at the Al-Jazeera II basecamp in Mogadishu, 160 FPU personnel, upon the completion of their tenure in Somalia, were honored with AU medals of distinction and certificates of acknowledgment.

In her remarks to the police personnel, CP Kanu remarked, “Your contribution to the Somali Police Force, spanning operations, escorts, and mentorship, has been invaluable. The exemplary manner in which you handle your duties, including weapon management, presentation, and the demonstration of utmost discipline, serves as a beacon of enlightenment for them.”
Furthermore, she commended the Government of Uganda and the leadership of the Uganda Police Force for furnishing logistical assistance and guidance to the officers deployed to ATMIS.
Echoing sentiments of pride and appreciation, ATMIS Deputy Police Commissioner, CP Martin Amoru, expressed, “Your resilience and dedication amidst adversities are commendable. Your endeavors here will be etched in the annals of Somalia’s journey towards peace and reconstruction.”

In Somalia, the Uganda FPU collaborates with counterparts from Ghana, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone, undertaking tasks such as providing escorts to Individual Police Officers (IPOs) on mentoring assignments, safeguarding vital governmental installations, and conducting joint patrols with the Somali Police Force.
SSP Juventine Euku, the contingent commander of the outgoing Formed Police Unit-11, affirmed, “The success of our FPU stems from collective effort, cooperation, and effective coordination with allied security forces. We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to fulfilling our designated duties in advancing the ATMIS Police mandate in support of Somalia’s indigenous security initiatives.”
The ceremony was attended by senior ATMIS police and military officials, including Acting ATMIS Police Operations and FPU Coordinator, ACP Richard Evans Onyait, and Uganda Military Contingent Chief Administrative Officer, Col. Emmanuel Ewana.
