Dr. Kaziimba, the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, commended the parliament for their work and described it as thorough stating that homosexuality poses a challenge in Uganda as it is perceived as being imposed by foreign actors against the country’s desires, culture, and religious values. He also pointed out that both Ugandan culture and the Bible view gay relationships unfavorably.

Dr. Kaziimba, the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda praised president Museveni for not refusing to sign the bill into law despite pressure from the West.

“We are appreciative that the current statute upholds the virtues of the current penal code’s existing provisions. We are also appreciative of how the act strengthens already-existing laws by providing stronger child protection measures, such as strong promotion restrictions and a ban on employment for those convicted of violating the act, in organisations that work directly with children. We also like the act’s provision of protection against unfounded accusations,”Dr. Kaziimba.

He added “The nations that affirm LGBTQ people have demonstrated the drawbacks for us. We appreciate the president’s resolute stand against their intimidation and for defending Uganda from their destructive paths.”

For individuals found guilty of aggravated defilement and aggravated homosexuality, he added, the Church of Uganda does not support the death penalty as it is specified in the new law.

Life in prison should be the penalty, according to the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda.

Because it is being imposed on us by outside, foreign actors against our desire, against our culture, and against our religious values, homosexuality is currently a challenge in Uganda. They present themselves as “human rights activists,” yet by incorporating LGBTQ into their agenda, they are tainting genuine human rights, Dr. Kaziimba said.

“There have always been a few known gays in our communities, and the communities knew how to interact with them. Homosexuality is not a part of our cultures or societies as evidenced by the fact that only a small number of our native tongues even contain the word for it. One of the areas where our culture and the Bible are in agreement is that the Bible never speaks well of gay relationships.”

Anita Among, the Speaker of Parliament, revealed on Monday 29th May 2023 that President Museveni had finally given his approval for the Anti-Homosexuality Bill 2023 to become law.
