Carrefour Uganda, owned and operated by Majid Al Futtaim, has handed over renovated classrooms and a dining hall to Peculiar Child Care Support in Mukono and the Kireka Home for Children with Special Needs.

The renovations were funded by the proceeds of the Round Up Your Bill initiative, which aims to support vulnerable groups in the communities where Carrefour operates through customer donations.

According to Christophe Orcet, Regional Director for East Africa, following the handover of two newly built classroom blocks last year at St. Noah’s Ark in Entebbe, they decided to take on a second phase of the project.

Today, we are handing over renovated classrooms at Peculiar Child Care Support in Mukono and a refurbished dining hall at Kireka Home for Children with Special Needs.

This was made possible through the sh88,277,164 raised at our Carrefour stores.

Carrefour Uganda team and representatives from Kireka Home for the Mentally Handicapped cut cake in celebration of the Round Up Your Bill Project.

These include Oasis Mall and Metroplex Mall. The funds were used to paint, repair, and replace roofs, windows, and floors, among other renovations. Additionally, we purchased food items to improve the children’s nutrition and well-being,” Orcet explained.

Aloysius Kiribaki a treasurer and member of the school managing committee commended the team for the renovations, adding that despite the school being government-aided, support has remained minimal.

“The support from the government is not enough and yet we have to cater for over 100 children with intellectual impairment. This is why we end up asking for support from well-wishers.”

He added that currently, the school has only six teachers which is way below the required number given the high number of students in the school.

Launched in September 2021, the Round Up Your Bill Initiative is Carrefour’s commitment to improving the lives of vulnerable children by supporting schools and homes across Uganda, where its stores operate.

The Round Up Your Bill initiative works by offering Carrefour customers the option to round up their total at checkout, with the difference being donated to a partner home or school.

For example, if a customer’s bill amounts to sh7,300, they can round it up to sh8,000, donating sh700 to support vulnerable children.

Since its launch, Carrefour has raised over sh285 million across all its stores, with proceeds funding various projects at the partnered homes and schools.

“We encourage our customers to continue rounding up their bills so we can improve the lives of even more vulnerable groups in our communities.”
