Change of mind, United States of America (USA) declares funding for HIV AIDS fight despite Anti gay law
The United States government has pledged to keep supporting the government of Uganda in the fight against HIV AIDS despite the recent anti gay law that was enacted by Parliament of Uganda.
The United States and other western powers condemned government of Uganda with threats of cutting funding, the US has changed its mind and promised to continue funding Ugandan government as well as NGOs in the fight against HIV AIDS.
The announcement came a day after President Museveni said the country would not criminalise a person for being a homosexual or bar them from accessing health care. It also follows a meeting the President had with the US Ambassador.
This meeting was held between the US ambassador to Uganda Natalie Brown and the Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni at state house Entebbe last week on Thursday 8th June 2023.
The US has announced grants to fight HIV/AIDS that can be applied for by small organizations ranging from USD 15000 dollars (about 55m ugx) to USD 310,000 about 1.1 bn ugx.
The said funding will be accessed through President’s Emergency Plan for AIDs Relief PEPFAR. The funding according to the US embassy website will be providing treatment, prevention and care for people affected with HIV AIDS giving Uganda around 1.4 trillion annually.
