According to the Beijing municipal government’s justice bureau, specialists at the capital’s Beijing Wangshen Dongjian Justice Appraisal Institute found a method to decrypt an iPhone’s encrypted device record.

They may then determine an AirDrop user’s phone number and email accounts, according to a Monday statement on the bureau’s website.

The method, according to the company, “cracked the tough technological problem of the transmission of inappropriate information with anonymous traceability via AirDrop”.

It has also “raised the efficacy and accuracy of case detection and resolution, and has effectively helped police ascertain several case suspects”.

The statement made no indication of whether or whether the strategy resulted in any arrests or convictions.

Apple did not immediately reply to an AFP request for comment.

In late 2022, there were numerous rumors that people in China were utilizing AirDrop to distribute digital pamphlets critical of the government.

The transmissions were said to be prompted in part by a demonstration in Beijing in which a man hanged banners demanding for President Xi Jinping’s ouster.

Apple introduced an AirDrop upgrade in November of that year, allowing users of Apple handsets in China to opt-in to receive files from unknown contacts for a 10-minute period before it automatically switches off. Previously, there was no time limit on the functionality.

The change makes it nearly hard to get files from strangers.

Apple has often been chastised for allegedly making concessions to Xi’s more restrictive China.

In 2020, Beijing passed a broad national security law in Hong Kong, effectively silencing public opposition in the former British territory.
