Denmark PledgesSh362b to Aid Uganda’s Climate Change Mitigation and Refugee Assistance

President Museveni sought Danish support for Uganda’s wetland reclamation program, aiming to relocate illegal rice growers. During a meeting with the Danish envoy, Denmark expressed willingness to contribute $95 million to address climate change effects and assist refugees.

President Yoweri Museveni requested the Danish government’s support for his wetland reclamation programme that aims to relocate illegal rice growers in Ugandan swamps.

“They are there illegally, so I try to incentivize them. I wouldn’t call it compensation because they are the ones in the wrong.

“Therefore, if you can mobilize funding to incentivize them to leave the swamps and engage in fish farming on the periphery instead of the Centre,” said Museveni.

He made the remarks during a meeting with the Danish envoy Dan Joergensen, who is the Minister for Development Co-operation and Global Climate Policy, and his delegation at State Lodge Nakasero on Wednesday 24th Jan 2024.

The nine-man Danish delegation included climate ambassador Thomas Anker Christensen (climate ambassador) and Danish Ambassador to Uganda, Signe Winding Albjerg.

Minister Joergensen appreciated President Museveni’s efforts and commitment to addressing climate change and refugee issues.

He expressed Denmark’s willingness to support Uganda’s wetland reclamation programme and contribute $95 million (sh362) to help mitigate the effects of climate change and provide assistance to refugees.

Museveni commended Denmark’s support and emphasized the importance of preserving Uganda’s natural resources, particularly the tributaries of River Nile.

He reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to sustainable development and building resilience in the face of climate change.

Uganda’s foreign affairs minister, Gen. Jeje Odongo, and the foreign affairs permanent secretary Vincent Bagiire Waiswa attended the meeting.
