“Deploy Intern Doctors”, Speaker Among asks Government
Speaker of Parliament of Uganda Rt. Hon. Anita Among has encouraged Government to deploy intern doctors to improve health services in the country.
Speaker Anita Among has encouraged the government to send out intern doctors to enhance the nation’s healthcare system.
Concerned about the shortage of healthcare professionals at medical facilities, Among attributed it to a lack of motivation brought on by a lack of funding.
In reference to the current social media movement #UgandaHealthExhibition, Among urged the government to fund the health sector adequately and to send out intern doctors to help with the shortage.
One expert remarked that failing to use intern doctors’ results in a dearth of trained medical workers as well as the interns’ inability to practice medicine.
Among expressed her surprise at a report from her district, Bukedea, that claimed there were no medical personnel present at the facilities.
“We need to encourage our health workers to always be available for our people, and as Parliament, we will try our best to always ensure that we have money for the health workers, hospitals, and medicines,” Rt. Hon. Among said.
Over 2000 interns nationwide are transitioning to become doctors, according to Hon. Michael Bukenya (NRM, Bukuya County M.P), but they are currently stuck with pay and deployment.
“The Ministry of Finance should be specific on when they are going to release the money for the interns because at the moment they are not working,” he continued.
