Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations, yesterday 30th November 2023 highlighted the need of promoting girls’ education, citing Mao Zedong’s adage that “women hold up half the sky.”
Reiterating the previous Chinese leader’s statement, Gen. Kainerugaba said, “What he meant by that is that women hold up half the society.” He went on to say that if half of society is disabled as a result of the girl child not getting an education, then society is disabled overall. He underlined that the underrepresentation of girls and women in general prevents a society from being free, affluent, and stable.
Speaking at a fundraising dinner for Bishop’s Girls School Rushere, a multipurpose hall, Gen Kainerugaba thanked Bishop Stephen Namanya for initiating the project to create the lone school for girls in the North Ankore diocese, which includes the districts of Kiruhuura and Kazo.
Prominent people, including members of parliament, UPDF generals, and business community representatives, attended the ceremony. Among the notable guests were Amb Michael Katungi, Hon. Joanne Okia, Maj Gen (rtd) Stephen Kashaka, Hon. Wilson Kajwengye, and Lt Gen (rtd) Henry Tumukunde.
Of addition to praising Charlotte’s dedication to the cause, Gen. Kainerugaba emphasized his wife as a great role model for the girls of Rushere, the community where the school is situated.
The event’s principal visitor, Lady Charlotte, conveyed her appreciation for the school’s neatness and structure in spite of its youth. She clarified that she went to the school upon being invited to be the main attraction at the fundraising function.
She also complimented her husband’s commitment to helping the less poor and thanked him for supporting the project.
During the event at the Protea Hotel in Kampala, a total of 555,150,000 UGX was raised, which is more than half of the 900 million UGX goal for the new main hall at Bishop’s Girls School Rushere.
While friends and family raised over 40 million UGX, including the Ruparelia Foundation (10 million), the Kutesa family (22 million), and the Natasha and Karugire family (5 million), Gen. Kainerugaba and his family gave 50 million UGX.
In addition to promoting awareness of the value of educating girls, the fundraiser dinner was a great success in meeting its financial goal. The Ugandan community in attendance was very supportive of this project.
