Entebbe Airport Expansion Nears Completion to Meet Rising Passenger Numbers
Entebbe International Airport has registered a significant rise in the number of passengers, a sign of recovery of Uganda’s aviation sector from the adverse effects of COVID-19.In the month of March 2024, the Airport handled 80,719 arriving and 91,271 departing passengers, a total of 171,990 international passengers. This is an average of 5,548 passengers per day.

Passenger volume at Entebbe International Airport has significantly increased, indicating that Uganda’s aviation industry is rebounding from the negative consequences of COVID-19. The airport handled 91,271 outgoing and 80,719 arriving passengers in March 2024, for a total of 171,990 foreign passengers. This equates to 5,548 passengers every day on average.

“The comparative daily average in the same month of March 2023 was 3,539 passengers,” said Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCCA) spokesperson, Vianney Luggya.
This comes on the heels of increased traffic averaging over 6,000 passengers per month in the previous three months of December, January and February.
On the cargo side, the airport handled 1,902 metric tons of imports and 3780 metric tons of exports, a total of 4682 metric tons in March, 2024.
Meanwhile, the works on the upgrade and expansion of the Airport are 90% complete, according to UCCA Director General, Fred Bamwesigye.
Bamwesigye, addressing reporters at the Airport, said the major pending work is the construction of the terminal building.
“The major remaining project is the 20,000 square meter terminal building, currently under construction to connect to the existing terminal building, and is at 60% level of completion. Overall, the project works are at 90% level of completion. The other pending work is expansion of Apron 1, which is at 95% level of completion,” he said.

Other earlier completed works under the same project include resurfacing of runways 17/35 and 12/30 plus their associated taxiways, construction of a new 100,000 tones capacity terminal building, erection of the Cargo Apron and resurfacing of Aprons 2 and 4.
“On completion of the new terminal building, whose works are expected to be completed in 2024, the terminal capacity will be enhanced from the previous maximum capacity of 2 million passengers a year to at least 3.5 million passengers to address the growing traffic,” said Bamwesigye.
Entebbe International Airport has been ranked among the best 10 airports in Africa.
The report by Skytrax, an internationally recognized organization which assesses airlines globally ranked Entebbe Airport number seven out of top 10 Airports on the African continent.
