The documentary “Those From Among You” is made by Natasha Museveni Karugire, the First Daughter of President Yoweri Museveni. The documentary aims to document the experiences and stories of the NRA/M liberation and various players involved to help the younger generation understand Uganda’s history and appreciate its progress.

The documentary, titled “Those from Among You” is made by First Daughter Natasha Museveni Karugire.

“We are not having our story told. We must share our stories,” she said in an interview.

According to Natasaha, one of the reasons she documented NRA/M liberation experiences and stories from different players was to help the new generation—especially the nation’s 78% young population—contextualize the battle.

“Knowing the background of our trip is beneficial. It’s important to understand where we’ve come from, she continued, in order to appreciate where Uganda is now and gain a clearer idea of what the future may bring.”

When asked what motivated her to give her current project the title “Those From Among You,” Natasha responded saying that the desire to reconstruct the bridge, as expressed in Isaiah 58:12, was the driving force behind it.

“Specifically, the verse talks about repairing the bridge. It says: ‘You will be called repairer of broken walls, restorer of streets with dwellings,” she said, calling upon the youth to be more patriotic Ugandans that passionately love their country.

“I wish that colonialism didn’t not define us so much,” she said, noting that since we are now a nation, citizens should embrace unity.

“Let’s come together,” she said, rooting for patriotism and Pan-Africanism.
The liberation of Uganda, Natasha said came at a price.

She continued by saying that a generation of bold and tenacious young people who longed for a better country paid this price.

However, Natasha emphasized that for their heroic actions to be realized, these people needed to have faith in President Yoweri Museveni’s strategic plan.

Natasha researched the Luwero Bush war tale and spoke with a variety of people, including historians, veterans of the 1981–1986 Bush War, and senior residents who provided their personal accounts of the conflict and their perspectives on it.

In a documentary, Natasha also documents significant junctures in the history of the nation, from pre-colonial social systems to colonial intrusions to the post-colonial period of unrest to the current National Resistance Army/Movement (NRA/M) regime revolution.

As a passionate supporter of the arts and the creative sector, Natasha in September 2018 also released the biopic 27 Guns, which is about President Museveni and the NRA/M fighters. She depicts the sacrifices made by Museveni and his military allies to put an end to years of unrest that had engulfed the nation since independence.

Natasha asserted that by allowing Africans to express their own experiences, the narrative will remain authentic and unaltered by other influences. She continued by saying that these tales serve as a reliable source of knowledge for upcoming generations.

Natasha also released her autobiography in 2020 under the title “What’s in a Name: Kainembabazi,” in which she describes her journey through life as a kid, mother, and first daughter, among other significant events that influenced her outlook on life.
