Former Amuria County MP and veteran journalist, Francis Ekomoloit Onapito, will now be laid to rest in late November, in accordance with his wishes.

The Minister for the Presidency, Hon. Milly Babalanda, announced on Monday, September 30, that a meeting held to organize the funeral of the late Presidential Press Secretary agreed to align the burial arrangements with his expressed will.

“Following a meeting involving the family, legal representatives of the deceased, and the National Organizing Committee (NOC) at the Cabinet Library today, it was agreed to align the burial arrangements with the will of the late Hon. Onapito,” Minister Babalanda stated.

She further explained that Onapito would be buried in late November, as per his wishes outlined in his will.

“The NOC, together with the family and Parliament, will provide an update on the final arrangements in early November. We continue to pray for strength for the bereaved family during this difficult time,” the Minister added.

Sources close to the NOC have indicated that the burial is tentatively scheduled for November 30 in Amuria District.

Onapito, fondly referred to as “Ona” by his colleagues and friends, passed away on Friday morning, September 27, in Kampala at the age of 58.

According to sources close to the deceased, he had requested to be buried after 60 days. Before his passing, he had contacted an engineer to oversee the construction of his grave.

On Sunday, Minister Babalanda announced that the President had decided to accord the distinguished journalist an official burial.

In her statement, she mentioned that the NOC would work closely with Parliament to organize a fitting send-off.

An official burial, granted by the President, is a mark of recognition for individuals who have demonstrated exceptional service, with the government covering all associated costs.

At the time of his passing, Onapito was serving as the Board Chairperson of Soroti Fruit Factory. He had previously chaired the Board of Directors at Nile Breweries Limited, a position he took on in August last year after 17 years as the Head of Corporate Affairs at the same organization.
