In a significant move towards hosting the prestigious 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, a delegation from the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) recently conducted an inspection of Nakivubo Stadium. The purpose of the visit was to ensure that the facility’s development is on track, as Nakivubo Stadium stands as one of the proposed venues in Uganda’s joint bid with Kenya and Tanzania, known as the Pamoja Bid.

The Pamoja Bid represents a unique collaboration between three East African nations, aiming to showcase the region’s passion for football and its ability to host a world-class tournament. Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania have come together, recognizing the mutual benefits of hosting such a prestigious event and the opportunity it presents for the development of football in the region.

A delegation from FUFA, was headed by Hon. Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi, accompanied by members of the FUFA Executive Committee and AFCON 2027 Internal working Committee that included; Rogers Mulindwa, Ronnie Kalema, and Amin Bbosa Nkono, Decolas Kiiza and Projects Manager Sumaya Kiwanuka.

During the FUFA delegation’s visit, several key aspects of the stadium were assessed. These included the infrastructure, playing surface, seating capacity, dressing rooms, media facilities, and spectator amenities. The inspection aimed to identify any areas that require attention and ensure that the development plans align with the tournament’s specifications and timelines.

The inspection team also assessed the progress made in upgrading facilities to meet international standards, with a particular focus on safety, security, and spectator comfort. Nakivubo stadium’s renovation and modernization are essential to meet the required standards and provide an exceptional experience for players, officials, and spectators alike.

Hon. Nakiwala Kiyingi, FUFA 3rd Vice President, thanked the Government of Uganda for working closely with both public and private practioners to make sure the infrastructure of sports in Uganda is underscored and given the consideration it requires. In addition to Nakivubo, Uganda has four other stadiums that meet CAF requirements. These are in different parts of the country and will ensure that the tournament is accessible to fans all over.

The successful hosting of the Africa Cup of Nations would not only bring global attention to Uganda but also contribute significantly to the country’s economy and tourism sector. It would create employment opportunities, stimulate local businesses, and promote Uganda as a favourable destination for international sporting events. Furthermore, the tournament’s legacy would leave a lasting impact on the development of football infrastructure, grassroots programs, and talent nurturing within the nation.

The FUFA delegation’s visit to Nakivubo Stadium signifies the commitment and dedication of Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania towards securing the rights to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. It demonstrates the meticulous planning and preparation required to stage a tournament of this magnitude successfully. As the inspection concluded, the FUFA delegation expressed their satisfaction with the progress made at Nakivubo Stadium.
