In a significant move that reflects the growth and dedication towards the well-being of the army personnel, Gen. The apartment block, christened in honour of the brave National Resistance Army (NRA) combatant, Col. Patrick Lumumba, boasts state-of-the-art facilities. Each of the apartments is an epitome of comfort and modernity. They feature three generously sized bedrooms, a commodious living room, a fully equipped kitchen, two toilets, ample storage space, and two balconies that offer scenic views.

A significant investment, the construction of the apartment block was undertaken at a cost of Shs 2 billion. But this isn’t a standalone project. It is a fragment of a grand housing vision that spans across various formations of the armed forces. This housing project underscores the commitment to providing the best facilities to the army personnel who tirelessly serve the nation.

Gen. Muhoozi’s tenure as the Land Forces commander was marked by an unprecedented drive towards infrastructural expansion. Under his visionary leadership, a whopping 400 housing facilities have been erected across various army divisions throughout Uganda. This ambitious initiative has transformed the living standards of countless army personnel and their families.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Gen. Muhoozi remarked, “It gives me great pleasure to be back here in Bombo. This is the home of the venerable Land Forces.”

He further highlighted the past neglect of the accommodation facilities in Bombo, stating, “For a very long time, accommodation facilities at Bombo were not a priority.” The structures that stood here once were in stark contrast to the modern marvels that have now been constructed, reflecting the sorry state of affairs of the past.

Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who served as the Commander Land Forces from June 2021 to October 2022, shared insightful historical details during the ceremony. “Rebuilding of the old barracks started a couple of years ago when we came in,” he revealed.

The Bombo military facility isn’t just another barrack; it holds a rich history that dates back over a century. “Many of you may not know that it’s the oldest in Uganda and East Africa,” Muhoozi said, educating many in the gathering. “It was established in 1906, marking 117 years since its inception. Back then, it was the home of the 4th King African Rifles.” He went on to share that the soldiers stationed at Bombo during that era were primarily from diverse backgrounds, including Indians, Somalis, and the Swahili from the coast. As a testament to its significance, Bombo was regarded as a model station for the entirety of East Africa.

Speaking of its leadership back then, Muhoozi mentioned, “The overall commander was Brig. William Manning. The history of this place is profound and rich.” He emphasized the importance of ensuring that the facilities at Bombo stand as a proud reflection of its illustrious past. “We must make the facilities here as good as that rich history,” he urged.

It was evident that Gen. Muhoozi had a deep-seated sentiment for the barracks, which was intensified when he witnessed its state upon his appointment in 2021. “It was painful when I came in 2021 and saw how facilities had been run down,” he lamented.

However, Gen Muhoozi expressed his gratitude towards the Commander-in-Chief, who not only shared his vision but also sanctioned the resources needed for the refurbishment. “I thank the Commander-in-Chief who agreed to rebuild the place and provided the resources to do so,” he stated.

Updating on the current developments, Gen Muhoozi remarked, “We started rebuilding Bombo, and I am proud to say that significant progress has been made. Notably, the perimeter wall is nearing its completion.” He further outlined the future developments, including the construction of the Camp Commandant’s house, an operations centre, guard houses, and the entry gates, which are currently in a ramshackle state.

Gen. Muhoozi’s words and the unveiling of Bomb’s new developments were met with an overwhelming standing ovation from the senior officers present at the ceremony, signalling a renewed hope and pride in the legacy and future of Bombo barracks.

With the new apartments and workshop standing tall in Bombo, it is evident that the UPDF is not just focused on bolstering its operational capabilities, but also on ensuring the welfare and comfort of its personnel. The initiative underlines the army’s dedication to its forces, giving them the respect and facilities, they truly deserve.
