The UPDF Military Police Traffic Department has augmented the Uganda Police Force’s traffic division to address driver indiscipline, following public complaints. Their efforts include curbing the unauthorized use of military attire to intimidate traffic officials and ensuring compliance with military procedures among UPDF drivers.

The UPDF Military Police Traffic Department has reinforced the Uganda Police Force’s traffic division to address driver indiscipline, as highlighted by complaints to the UPDF leadership.

Their mandate includes tackling the issue of unauthorized individuals wearing military attire, such as uniforms and jackets, to intimidate traffic officials.

“Furthermore, they will ensure adherence to military standard operating procedures among UPDF drivers and officers on the road. These impromptu checks will be concentrated in the Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) area to enhance road safety for all,” explained Col Deo Akiki, Deputy Spokesperson of the UPDF.

In response, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), has ordered the arrest of army drivers and their guards, as well as State House staff, who have been violating traffic regulations.

This directive follows numerous public complaints about the reckless driving habits of military and government officials, which have resulted in several accidents and near-misses.
