Gen. Katumba Wamala, the Minister of Works and Transport, publicly announced the need for the overhaul of Karuma Bridge, located on the Kampala-Gulu Highway, citing the bridge’s functional obsolescence. The decision was prompted by concerns raised by Hon. Ojara Mapenduzi during a plenary session regarding the increasing number of traffic accidents on the bridge, resulting in fatalities as vehicles crash into the River Nile.

Government’s intentions to redesign and reassemble the Karuma Bridge on the Kampala-Gulu Highway have been made public by Gen. Katumba Wamala, Minister of Works and Transport.

The minister claims that the 1963-built bridge has to be overhauled because it is no longer functional.

He was prompted to respond by Hon. Ojara Mapenduzi (Bardege-Layibi Division), who expressed worry during Thursday 22nd June 2023 plenary session over the rising number of traffic accidents on Karuma Bridge, where cars are crashing into the River Nile and taking lives.

Gen. Wamala said that works are in the pipeline to rehabilitate Karuma Bridge provided funds are availed soon.

Gen. Wamala stated, “We are in talks with several development partners to redesign and relocate this bridge to address the problems of the growing traffic on that road.

On Wednesday 21st June 2023, a truck with the licence plate UAT 113F ran off the Karuma Bridge, struck some flimsy guardrails, and then fell into the Nile.
