Government of Uganda recently launched an ambitious initiative aimed at empowering women and driving economic growth in the country. The project, known as Generating Growth Opportunities and Productivity for Women (GROW), will provide funding and support to 35,000 micro businesses owned by women across 46 districts in Uganda. It is estimated that approximately 1.6 million people will benefit from this initiative, which seeks to promote entrepreneurship, gender equality, and poverty alleviation.

The government of Uganda seeks to finance women through a $217m (sh800b) fund where, 1542m (155m) will support Women Empowerment and Enterprise Development Services, including in host and refugee communities, 2590m (sh332m) will finance women entrepreneurs to support the transition from micro enterprises to small and from small to medium enterprises, and 3570m (sh528m) will be used to develop infrastructure and facilities for women enterprise growth and transition, including user and childcare facilities to ensure that women have access to support economic and social infrastructure, $15m (sh55m) will be for programme management support, policy innovation and evidence generation.

The GROW project recognizes the crucial role that women play in the economic development of Uganda. Women in Uganda have long been engaged in various forms of economic activities, particularly in the informal sector, where they often face numerous challenges such as limited access to capital, market opportunities, and business training. By targeting micro businesses owned by women, the government aims to address these barriers and create an enabling environment for female entrepreneurs to thrive.

Under the project, the Government of Uganda will provide financial resources, business development services, and training to selected women-owned micro businesses. The funding will be allocated to various sectors, including agriculture, manufacturing, services, and trade, to ensure a diverse range of economic opportunities. By supporting these businesses, the government hopes to stimulate economic growth, job creation, and poverty reduction in the targeted districts.

In addition to financial support, the GROW project will promote gender equality and women’s empowerment by addressing social and cultural barriers that hinder women’s economic participation. It will provide support networks and facilitate mentorship programs for women entrepreneurs. By promoting an inclusive and supportive business environment, the government hopes to create opportunities for women to succeed and contribute to the overall development of the country.

The project’s impact is expected to extend beyond the immediate beneficiaries. By empowering women and supporting their businesses, it is anticipated that job creation will occur, leading to improved livelihoods not only for the entrepreneurs themselves but also for their families and communities. As women become financially independent and active contributors to the economy, their increased income and economic power will have a multiplier effect, boosting local economies and promoting sustainable development.

The Government of Uganda’s commitment to funding 35,000 micro businesses for women through the GROW project is a significant step toward promoting gender equality and inclusive economic growth. By recognizing the potential of women entrepreneurs and providing them with the necessary resources and support, Uganda is paving the way for a more prosperous and equitable future. As the project unfolds, it will be crucial to monitor its progress, ensure transparency, and continuously evaluate its impact to maximize its effectiveness and bring about positive change in the lives of Ugandan women and their communities.
