Gulu Airport is set to undergo a substantial overhaul, as Minister General Katumba Wamala disclosed plans to enhance its facilities. This initiative is part of broader efforts, including the conversion of Arua Airport into an International Airport, signaling advancements in Uganda’s aviation infrastructure.

Gulu Airport is poised for a significant upgrade, as stated by the Minister of Works and Transport, General Katumba Wamala.

In response to a query raised by Martin Mapenduzi Ojara (Bardege-Layibi Division) regarding the government’s preparedness to host CHAN and AFCON, the minister informed Parliament on Fridays that all thoroughfares leading to Gulu airport and its vicinity would undergo improvements.

Gulu Airport serves both civilian and military purposes in the Northern Region of Uganda, functioning as a designated entry and exit point for the country.

The minister’s announcement coincides with the recent signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the government and East of Eden (U) Ltd (EOE), a locally incorporated private entity tasked with conducting a feasibility study to transform Arua Airport into an International Airport under a build, operate, and transfer model.

Arua Airport ranks as the second-busiest airport in Uganda, following Entebbe International Airport. Minister General Katumba, on February 28, 2024, formalized the MOU with the investor subsequent to approval by the Solicitor General.

Sandra Zawedde, Chairperson of EOE (U) Ltd, signed the agreement on behalf of the investor, in the presence of the company secretary, Lydia Nakamalira Tamale, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Works and Transport, Waiswa Bageya, and Director General of the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA), Fred Bamwesigye.
