The government has granted approval for Hoima City to serve as the venue for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) following the acquisition of 20 acres of land dedicated to the construction of a new stadium for this prestigious event.
On Tuesday, November 21, a delegation comprising officials from the Ministry of Education, FUFA, and the National Council of Sports (NCS), led by State Sports Minister Peter Ogwang, Education Ministry Permanent Secretary Ketty Lamaro, and FUFA President Moses Magogo, conducted an inspection of the designated land at Mparo in Hoima City.
Minister Ogwang conveyed that the stadium is envisioned to accommodate four teams, and negotiations with the Ministry of Tourism are underway to ensure that local hotels adhere to international standards. He also highlighted the selection of Hoima due to the upcoming completion of the Kabalega International Airport.
FUFA President Moses Magogo shared that they are awaiting designs from the contractor before the commencement of construction, with Hoima Stadium forming part of Uganda’s joint bid with Kenya and Tanzania for hosting AFCON.
Magogo expressed gratitude for the land donations, with 10 acres contributed by Hon. Pius Wakabi’s family and an additional 10 acres acquired by FUFA in Hoima. He mentioned the approval of this initiative by the President and the Minister for Education, Janet Museveni.
Pius Rujumba Wakabi, the MP for Bugahya County, pledged full support for the project, emphasizing its significance for the country.
Minister Ogwang outlined plans for additional sports facilities in Hoima and Masindi districts, emphasizing the need for extra land for construction. Hoima City Mayor Brian Kaboyo mentioned ongoing discussions with German investors to develop modern facilities around the city.
The Kabalega International Airport is progressing well, with a planned cargo plane landing test in December 2023, marking a significant milestone in Uganda’s oil and gas development. The airport boasts a 3.5km runway and is nearing 98% completion, with plans for a control tower underway. SBC Uganda Ltd and SBI International Holdings collaborated on the $309 million project, ensuring its alignment with the highest standards.
Amos Muriisa, the public relations representative for SBC Uganda, confirmed the completion of cargo terminal warehouses, designed to handle heavy machinery and crews. Muriisa emphasized the airport’s capacity to accommodate four of the largest aircraft simultaneously, assuring Ugandans of the project’s commitment to quality.
