In a ceremony held at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs headquarters on December 5, 2023, outgoing Fisheries Protection Unit Commander, Lt Col Dick Kaija, was praised by the Chief of Defence Forces, General Wilson Mbadi, for his exceptional efforts in fighting criminality on the lakes and addressing unethical fishing practices.

During the handover/takeover ceremony, Gen Mbadi emphasized that the rotational change of office among UPDF personnel is a customary practice. He highlighted Lt Col Kaija’s remarkable achievements, mentioning that he not only enforced fisheries regulations but also took the time to educate fishermen about fishing guidelines, transportation policies, and the importance of fish licensing.

Expressing gratitude, Gen Mbadi commended Lt Col Kaija for his contributions in curbing illegal fishing practices that had previously led to the depletion of lakes, thereby restoring the fish population and increasing government revenue.

Lt Col Kaija, in turn, expressed his appreciation to the officers and militants who supported him during his tenure. He encouraged them to extend the same level of loyalty and support to the incoming commander, Lt Col Mercy Tukahirwa.

Taking over the reins, Lt Col Tukahirwa thanked the UPDF leadership for entrusting her with the position of Fisheries Protection Unit Commander. She pledged to execute her duties diligently and called for the full cooperation of the unit’s officers and personnel.

The ceremony was attended by high-ranking military officials, including Commander Special Forces Command, Brig Gen David Mugisha, and Commander Marines, Brig Gen Micheal Nyarwa, among others.

Lt Col Kaija’s commendable efforts in combating Lake Criminality and promoting sustainable fishing practices will undoubtedly leave a positive legacy within the Fisheries Protection Unit.
