ICC to Issue Compensatory Orders to Victims of LRA Commander Ongwen
The International Criminal Court will announce compensatory orders for victims of Dominic Ongwen, the Lord’s Resistance Army commander, on February 28, 2024. Ongwen was found guilty of crimes against humanity and war crimes in Northern Uganda and sentenced to 25 years in prison.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) will issue compensatory orders to the victims of incarcerated Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) commander Dominic Ongwen on February 28, 2024.
As per a statement from the ICC dated February 14, 2024, Trial Chamber IX of the ICC will announce the reparations order for victims in the Ongwen case on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, at 15:00 (local time in The Hague).
The delivery of the order will take place during a public hearing in a courtroom located in The Hague, Netherlands, in the presence of Mr. Ongwen, his defense team, and the legal representatives of the victims.
Both the Trust Fund for Victims and the Office of the Prosecutor have been extended invitations to attend the hearing, which will be broadcast live via the ICC website.
On February 4, 2021, Trial Chamber IX found Mr. Ongwen guilty of 61 crimes, including crimes against humanity and war crimes perpetrated in Northern Uganda between July 1, 2002, and December 31, 2005.
Subsequently, on May 6, 2021, Trial Chamber IX sentenced Mr. Ongwen to 25 years in prison. This verdict was affirmed by the Appeals Chamber on December 15, 2022.
Finally, on December 18, 2023, Mr. Ongwen was transferred from the ICC detention facility in The Hague, Netherlands, to a correctional facility in Norway to commence his sentence.
