Instagram on Wednesday made its generative AI-powered background editing tool available to users in the United States.

Ahmad Al-Dahle, the lead for generative AI at Meta, stated in a Thread that the tool will allow users to alter the background of their images using prompts for Stories.

Users will see ready prompts like “On a red carpet,” “Being chased by dinosaurs,” and “Surrounded by puppies” when they tap on the background editor icon on an image. For the purpose of changing the background, users can also write their own prompts.

Others will notice a “Try it” sticker with the invitation to play with the image generation tool after a user posts a Story using the freshly created background.

Snapchat introduced a new feature earlier this week that allows its premium users to create and share images created by artificial intelligence. The business introduced Dreams, a brand-new feature that lets users make imaginative portraits of themselves with various themes, in August. The social network made it possible for Snapchat+ users to customize their backgrounds using prompts earlier this year.

Earlier in the month, Meta made its 28 AI-powered characters accessible to users in the United States on all of its apps, including Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp. These characters also included support for Bing search and an improved context window. Simultaneously, the company introduced Imagine with Meta, a stand-alone AI image generator that utilized its proprietary Emu model.
