Kagulu Rocks, a Spectacular Driving Traction in Busoga Region

This astounding and gigantic rock is situated at Kagulu-Buyende district in Busoga region of Eastern Uganda. It is elevated at the height of 3,600 feet with other two sister rocks located just adjacent to Kagulu. This enormous rock has very deep and profound cultural and historical significance to the Basoga people.

This incredible, enormous rock is located in the eastern Ugandan district of Kagulu-Buyende, in the Busoga area. Raised to a height of 3,600 feet, Kagulu is surrounded by two more sibling boulders. For the Basoga people, this massive rock holds great cultural and historical importance.

Kagulu, the 10,000ft hill with gigantic rocks, offers adventurers a challenging climbing experience.

It is believed that the founder of Busoga kingdom-Mukama Namutukula- the prince of Bunyoro Kitara hid in the caves of this rock after his arrival along lake Kyoga while running away from the political clashes which arose in Bunyoro Kitara Empire at the time after the demise of his Father.

Mukama Namutukula gave birth to 5 children whom he bequeathed responsibility to administer different parts of Busoga which later became the major Chiefdoms of Busoga for example; Bugabula, Bulamogi, Luuka, Kigulu and Bukono.

Currently, the hill/rock is a coronation site of the Kyabazinga (king) of Busoga especially from the Bulamogi chiefdom.

Kagulu rock is one of the most tourist attractions in Uganda though not thoroughly toured. Recently, the rock has gained a lot of momentum as far as tourism is concerned as very many domestic and foreign tourists flow at the site that offers a series of tourism-based activities ranging from hiking up to the top of the rock, cultural encounters, petrology and community tours.

The rock offers a panoramic view of the nearby area to the tourists as they enthusiastically enjoy the breathtaking sights atop the rock such as waterfalls from the ancient caves and the River Nile confluence with lake Kyoga.

Busoga kingdom’s minister for tourism Hellen Namutamba, commended the central government for the various developments done at Kagulu rock which include construction of the statue of Namutukula the founder of Busoga, stairs and resting facilities where one can rest as he/she climbs the rock.
