The Minister of State for Education and Sports (Sports), Hon. Peter Ogwang, emphasized the need for timely completion during a visit to the facility.
The Minister of State for Education and Sports (Sports), Hon. Peter Ogwang tasked KCCA FC to have their works ongoing the development at MTN Omondi stadium in Lugogo finalized in time.
Ogwang revealed this during a visit to facility alongside FUFA President, Hon. Moses Magogo, NCS Chairman Ambrose Tashobya, NCS Secretary General Dr. Bernard Patrick Ogwel.
“The construction of the stadium is impressing but I have tasked the management of KCCA FC to ensure that the duration of the work is according to plan because this is one of the facilities we intend to use as a training ground during the AFCON 2027,” noted Ogwang.
The stadium is one of the facilities proposed to be used as a training ground for the upcoming AFCON 2027 tournament that Uganda will host with Kenya and Tanzania.
The Minister and his team were given a tour of the stadium by club CEO Anisha Muhoozi and Manager Operations and Administration Moses Kaddu.
Magogo commended the management of the club for the works done.
“I commend the management of KCCA FC for considering modern trends and requirements for a stadium befitting to host international tournaments. We have been told that there is provision for doping rooms, VAR room, security, media tribune, press conference room, media center, mixed zone, museum among others. As a Federation we will continue to guide and support clubs that have similar initiatives like KCCA FC,”stated Magogo.
The Chairman, National Council for Sports Ambrose Tashobya revealed that there is a lot to be done.
“The work is promising so far and there is still more to be done especially now the second phase construction is commencing soon. There is some progress made and hopefully the construction can get finished soon and the facility be opened for use,” noted Tashobya stressed out.
Muhoozi promised to have the second phase of facility development start in December.
“Currently, the construction of the first phase of the stadium is complete. We expect to commence the second phase construction work in December 2023, and this is expected to go on until the end of 2024. The delays that have been encountered have been due to stadium design reviews and changes to match current trends. Also, our biggest challenge is funding as the budget of construction for the entire stadium is 55 billion Uganda Shillings. We call onto the Government of Uganda to increase funding towards sports infrastructure development for our stadium and other stadium especially now that we have AFCON 2027 looming,” she reasoned.
The capacity of the primary stand is expected to be 7,000 seats although the entire stadium will accommodate 11,000 seats once complete.
