KCCA Launches Waste Management Campaign
Hajat Buzeki Sharifah, Executive Director of KCCA, has launched the Come and Clean Kampala Together campaign to promote household-level waste segregation and tackle poor waste management in Kinawataka slum.
The Executive Director of Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), Hajat Buzeki Sharifah, has officially launched a clean-up campaign titled Come and Clean Kampala Together.
The initiative aims to promote community engagement in waste sorting at the household level, enabling companies and individuals to collect specific types of waste for recycling and other uses.
“We need designated bags for different waste materials, which can later be collected by those interested in recycling or reusing the waste,” Hajat Buzeki stated.
She was accompanied by her deputy, Mr. Benon Kigenyi, and the Acting Director of Public Health, Dr. Sarah Zalwango, during an address to residents of Kinawataka-Mbuya in Nakawa Division.
Focus on Kinawataka Slum
Kinawataka, a densely populated slum in Nakawa, faces significant challenges in solid waste management. Community members often generate, store, and dispose of waste with minimal access to proper collection, transportation, and recycling systems. Residents have cited the distance to disposal sites as a primary factor contributing to poor waste disposal practices.
During a tour of the area, Hajat Buzeki observed the absence of a solid waste collection point within the Kinawataka slum. She emphasized that addressing issues such as inadequate funding, illegal dumping, and lack of awareness is critical for improving waste management in the area.
She further urged households to participate in sensitization programs to understand the benefits of proper waste segregation.
Calls for Enhanced Infrastructure
Nakawa Mayor, Mr. Paul Mugambe, highlighted the need for a comprehensive strategy to address garbage disposal, including the establishment of a proper landfill.
Ms. Piali Chowdhury, a partner supporting garbage collection in Mbuya-Kinawataka, underscored the importance of changing public perceptions and fostering a culture of proper waste management.
The Come and Clean Kampala Together campaign marks a significant step toward addressing the pressing challenges of waste management in Kampala through collective efforts.
