Lira City Roars for Wildlife: UWA Marathon Champions Conservation and Honors Fallen Rangers

Lira City’s Akii-Bua Stadium was electrified on March 2nd, 2025, as athletes from across Uganda and beyond gathered for the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) Marathon. This annual event, more than just a race, stands as a powerful testament to Uganda’s commitment to both athletic excellence and wildlife preservation. Held in anticipation of World Wildlife Day and coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), this year’s marathon carried particular significance.

The race attracted a stellar field of competitors, including celebrated Olympians Winnie Nanyondo, 800-meter champion Halima Nakaayi, and middle- and long-distance runner Ronald Musagala. Flagged off by Hon. Martin Mugarra Bahinduka, the State Minister for Tourism, Wildlife, and Antiquities, the marathon featured races across 42km, 21km, 10km, and 5km distances, with winners in the premier 42km category each receiving UGX 1 million. While fierce competition marked every race, Andiema Allan and Maxmila Cherotich emerged victorious in the 42km marathon and 21km women’s race respectively. Sarah Chelangat claimed the top spot in the 10km women’s category, and Dismas secured the 10km men’s title.
Beyond the pursuit of athletic glory, the UWA Marathon served a deeply meaningful purpose: raising funds for the education of children who lost their UWA ranger fathers in the line of duty. Under the poignant theme “Running to Educate the Children of Fallen Rangers,” the event successfully raised crucial funds to support the education of 60 children. The marathon saw enthusiastic participation from top athletes, including representatives from security agencies such as the Uganda Police Force, Uganda Prisons Service, and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), further highlighting the national unity behind this cause.
During the awards ceremony, Minister Mugarra lauded the athletes’ dedication, stating, “You inspire not only by your talent but by your commitment to the future of our wildlife… your contribution to Uganda’s conservation legacy is invaluable.”
Mr. Hangi Bashir, UWA’s Head of Public Relations, emphasized the profound impact of the funds raised. “The children of our fallen rangers are our future, and we are committed to ensuring they have the opportunity to thrive,” he explained. “We support their education from primary school right through to university, ensuring their futures are not defined by tragedy but by the promise of knowledge and opportunity.” Since 2002, Uganda has tragically lost dozens of rangers protecting its natural heritage, often in dangerous encounters with poachers. The marathon stands as a vital tribute to their sacrifice and an ongoing commitment to their families.
Furthermore, the UWA Marathon plays a crucial role in nurturing Uganda’s athletic talent. The strong presence of athletes from security agencies and athletics clubs underscores the nation’s vibrant running culture. Mr. Bashir highlighted the marathon’s broader vision, stating, “We are committed to promoting talent development in Uganda, in line with President Yoweri Museveni’s vision to harness the nation’s potential.” He added, “The UWA Marathon serves as a powerful tool to motivate young people to pursue athletics, as well as to foster a deeper connection between sports and wildlife conservation.”
The 2025 UWA Marathon in Lira City was a resounding success, embodying the spirit of competition, compassion, and conservation. It served as a powerful reminder of the interconnectedness of athletic achievement, environmental stewardship, and national unity in Uganda.
