Makerere University and Sogea Satom Partner to Advance Research and Innovation

The partnership aims to promote research, innovation, and talent development, providing students with industrial attachments, internships, and real-world project opportunities.

Makerere University and Sogea Satom Sign MoU to Strengthen Academia-Industry Collaboration

Makerere University has formalized a strategic partnership with Sogea Satom through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing collaboration between academia and industry. This agreement seeks to promote research, innovation, and talent development, thereby creating valuable opportunities for both students and faculty.

The MoU was signed by Mr. Marc Grechi, Country Director of Sogea Satom, and Professor Moses Musinguzi, Principal of the College of Engineering, Design, Art, and Technology (CEDAT), Makerere University. During the signing ceremony, Dr. Abubaker Wasswa Matovu, representing the Dean of the School of Engineering, conveyed enthusiasm for the partnership, emphasizing the university’s commitment to addressing industry challenges through innovative research, particularly in the energy sector.

Dr. Matovu also underscored the significant benefits this collaboration will offer students, including industrial attachments and internship opportunities that could contribute to final-year projects aimed at solving real-world challenges.

Mr. Grechi elaborated on Sogea Satom’s extensive operations across Africa as part of the France-based VINCI Construction group. He highlighted the company’s notable projects in Uganda, particularly the Katosi Water Treatment Plant, which stands as one of its major achievements since commencing operations in the country in 1990. Furthermore, he reaffirmed the company’s commitment to nurturing Ugandan talent by providing students with exposure to its operations, thereby enhancing their preparedness for professional careers.

Professor Musinguzi warmly welcomed Sogea Satom to CEDAT and introduced the various schools within the college, identifying multiple areas of potential collaboration, including internships, industry demonstrations, and guest lectures. He further emphasized the importance of equipping students with practical skills and encouraged Sogea Satom to support the college’s laboratories as part of their corporate social responsibility initiatives.

This partnership between Makerere University and Sogea Satom is expected to foster significant advancements in research, innovation, and talent development, strengthening the bridge between academia and industry.
