Makerere University Ranks 7th Among Top Universities in Africa

Makerere University stands out in EduRank’s evaluation, solidifying its reputation as a premier institution in Africa and setting a benchmark for academic excellence in the region.

Makerere University has been recognized among the top 10 universities in Africa, as per a metric-based evaluation encompassing 14,131 universities from 183 nations.

According to EduRank, which harnesses the world’s largest scholarly papers database comprising 98,302,198 scientific publications and 2,149,512,106 citations to assess universities across 246 research topics, Makerere secured the 7th position in Africa and emerged as the leading institution in East Africa.

Released on February 29, 2024, EduRank’s rankings indicate that Makerere University attained the 1st position in Uganda, ranked 819th globally in 2024, and achieved a placement within the top 50% across 122 research topics.

EduRank elucidates that Makerere University’s ranking is contingent upon three primary factors: Research output (comprising 21,641 academic publications and 422,183 citations attributed to the university), non-academic reputation, and the influence of 143 distinguished alumni.

Mbarara University of Science and Technology, securing the 95th position in the ranking, stands as the sole other Ugandan university within the top 100.

Noteworthy universities in Uganda in the 2024 rankings, following Makerere, encompass Kyambogo University (147), Kampala International University (154), Gulu University (position 183), and Uganda Christian University (190).

Makerere University surpassed Kenya’s University of Nairobi in EduRank’s assessment, emerging as the foremost university in the Eastern Africa region.

It is pertinent to acknowledge that various organizations undertake university rankings globally. Discrepancies among these rankings arise due to differing parameters utilized by each organization in evaluating institutions of higher learning.
