The announcement regarding the commencement of plans for the construction of standard gauge railways was made by the Minister of Works and Transport, General Edward Katumba Wamala. He disclosed this information during an Iftar dinner hosted by Yuasa Investment Limited, where numerous dignitaries were in attendance at the Sheraton Hotel.

Gen. Katumba Wamala disclosed that the government is presently engaged in discussions with a reputable Turkish company for the implementation of the standard gauge railways project. He emphasized, “We have acknowledged the necessity for standard gauge railways and have partnered with a dependable Turkish company to address this requirement.”

This collaborative effort signifies a significant step forward in modernizing the transportation infrastructure, ensuring more effective and dependable rail services for the nation.

In addition to discussing the railway project, the Minister also addressed the pressing issue of potholes on city roads, underscoring the government’s ambitious plans to enhance road safety measures. He stated, “We have developed a comprehensive strategy, and by July, significant road construction activities will be underway in the city to rectify the pothole problem.”

Furthermore, he expressed appreciation to the Turkish contractors for their commendable contributions to the country, noting, “I would like to extend my gratitude to the Turkish contractors who have made substantial contributions. They have undertaken impressive road projects, and soon we will witness their completion.”

Regarding road safety, the Minister acknowledged the critical issue of road accidents and emphasized the collective responsibility required to address it. He remarked, “I understand that there is considerable demand for the construction of standard gauge railways, but it is crucial to recognize that road safety is not the responsibility of one individual.”

Gen. Katumba Wamala appealed to the public to prioritize road safety and adopt responsible behavior on the roads, stating, “On average, nearly 4,000 lives are lost each year. This is a significant figure.”

The Minister’s call for collective responsibility underscores the crucial role every citizen plays in ensuring safer roads for all.

Wahaib emphasized the need for unity and care for the less fortunate, stating, “Ramadan teaches us to care for the needy, to build connections, and to look out for one another.”

Wahaib further elaborated on the significance of the last 10 days of Ramadan, particularly the blessed night known as Laylatul Qadr, which falls on odd nights.

Taking a moment for reflection, Wahaib discussed the role of businesses and individuals in uplifting their communities.

“As we conduct our businesses or engage in corporate environments, we must ask ourselves if we are truly fulfilling our obligation to the less fortunate,” he urged.

Acknowledging ongoing charitable efforts, he called for a collective effort to identify any shortcomings in meeting the community’s needs.

Wahaib emphasized the importance of introspection and taking action, stating, “Let us make a sincere effort to reconcile ourselves and ensure that we are fulfilling our role in supporting those in need.”
