In a significant effort to enhance emergency medical services and address the challenges of timely patient transportation, the Ministry of Health Uganda has decided to invest in regional air ambulances. This move aims to reduce unacceptable delays and in order to ensure the swift and efficient transportation of critically ill or injured patients.

Ministry of health has finalized plans to have regional air ambulances to ease transportation of critically ill or injured patients in situations where ground transportation would result in unacceptable delays. This has been disclosed by the Commissioner emergency medical services at the ministry of health Dr. John Baptist Waniaye Nambohe.at the launch of the association of ambulance professionals training.

By incorporating air ambulances into the existing emergency medical services framework, the ministry aims to provide swift transportation to patients who require urgent medical care. The availability of helicopters or fixed-wing aircraft will significantly reduce the travel time to reach hospitals or specialized healthcare facilities, ensuring that patients receive the necessary treatment in a timely manner.

The Ministry of Health’s plan includes starting air ambulance services in five regions of Uganda. These regions are the Albertine, Central, West, North, and East regions. Each region will have a dedicated air ambulance equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment and staffed by highly trained healthcare professionals.

These air ambulances will provide rapid response and evacuation services, ensuring that patients receive immediate attention during emergencies, and they will extend coverage to their respective areas, ensuring that critical patients can be transported quickly and efficiently to the nearest healthcare facility that can provide the necessary level of care.

Ongoing Training for Health Professionals

To ensure the seamless operation of regional air ambulances, the Ministry of Health is actively engaged in training healthcare professionals who will be involved in aeromedical services. This training encompasses a wide range of skills, including aeromedical protocols, emergency medical procedures, patient stabilization, and the operation of medical equipment during air transportation.

By equipping healthcare staff with the knowledge and skills required for aeromedical services, the Ministry of Health aims to maintain a high standard of care during air ambulance operations. Additionally, ongoing training programs will focus on interdisciplinary collaboration, fostering effective communication between healthcare providers, pilots, and other professionals involved in patient transportation.
