National Information Technology Authority Uganda’s Contributions to connecting Uganda to the National Backbone Infrastructure
The National Information Technology Authority Uganda (NITA-U), has played a significant role in connecting Uganda to the National Backbone Infrastructure (NBI), a high-speed broadband network that provides reliable and affordable connectivity to government agencies, businesses, and individuals across the country.
NITA-U has been responsible for the planning and coordination of the NBI project, including the design, procurement, installation, and maintenance of the fiber optic cable network. This has involved working closely with government agencies, private sector partners, and international donors to ensure that the project is delivered on time, within budget, and to the required standards.
NITA-U has been actively involved in the implementation and rollout of the NBI network, including the installation of fiber optic cables, transmission sites, and data centers. This has involved working with local communities to identify the best routes for the fiber optic cables and ensuring that the network is accessible to all parts of the country.
NITA-U has provided training and capacity building support to government agencies, businesses, and individuals on how to use the NBI network effectively. This has included training on how to access online services, use e-government applications, and make the most of the high-speed broadband connectivity provided by the NBI.
NITA-U has played a key role in developing policies and regulations to support the growth and development of the ICT sector in Uganda. This has included advocating for the adoption of open standards, promoting the use of e-government services, and supporting the development of local content and applications.
NITA-U’s contributions have been critical in connecting Uganda to the NBI and in promoting the use of ICTs for economic development and social transformation. Through its efforts, NITA-U has helped to reduce the digital divide in Uganda and improve access to essential services such as healthcare, education, and financial services.
