Uganda Police, in collaboration with the military, have launched a nationwide operation targeting unlicensed drivers, expired licenses, and non-compliant boda boda riders. The operation also focuses on drivers under the influence of alcohol and vehicles using illegal sirens and lights. The initiative aims to restore order on the roads.

Uganda Police have announced the commencement of a comprehensive nationwide operation focusing primarily on motorcycles and other motorists.

According to the traffic police spokesperson, Michael Kananura, the operation will be conducted across the entire country. “The operation will target individuals without driving licenses, those with expired licenses, and those driving outside of their licensed classes. Additionally, boda boda riders without crash helmets, reflective jackets, and those violating one-way traffic rules will be targeted,” Kananura stated.

Furthermore, the operation will address cases of driving under the influence of alcohol, particularly during nighttime hours.

This initiative is part of an ongoing crackdown on drivers who unlawfully use sirens, floodlights, and roof lights on their vehicles. The joint operation with the military is also focusing on government vehicles, especially those belonging to State House and the army, that breach traffic regulations.

Numerous vehicles, including those of ministers and other high-ranking officials, have been impounded during this crackdown aimed at restoring order on the roads.

The public has expressed support for these joint operations. Speaking on Monday 8th July 2024, the traffic police spokesperson reiterated that this collaborative effort with the military will persist until order is achieved on Ugandan roads.
