New Streetlights on Kampala Northern Bypass Set to Improve Security and Reduce Crime
UNRA has installed over 3,000 streetlights along the Kampala Northern Bypass, aiming to enhance security and reduce nighttime crime. The initiative, completed in collaboration with Umeme Limited, responds to public concerns about safety along the road.
In response to growing concerns regarding security along the Kampala Northern Bypass, the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has undertaken significant measures to enhance safety by installing streetlights along the road.
“We are pleased to announce that our technical teams, in collaboration with Umeme Limited, have successfully completed the installation and activation of over 3,000 streetlights along the Bwaise—Busega section of the Kampala Northern Bypass,” UNRA stated.
Motorists and pedestrians have long faced challenges along the northern bypass, particularly during nighttime, as criminal activities have been prevalent due to the lack of proper lighting.
Although the Police have implemented foot patrols and established security booths along the bypass to combat criminal activities, such incidents have persisted.
The public has repeatedly expressed concerns over the safety of road users, citing frequent ambushes by criminals who smash vehicle windows and rob victims of their valuables. The lack of adequate lighting and a poorly planned drainage system have often been blamed for creating an environment conducive to criminal activity.
There have been numerous calls for the government to address these security issues by installing streetlights along the road.
In a statement released on Saturday, UNRA confirmed, “All transformers are now installed and are awaiting a scheduled shutdown from Umeme to activate the streetlights, which is expected to occur next week.”
This development is anticipated to significantly improve the safety and security of road users traveling at night along this corridor.
“With enhanced visibility, we are confident that this safety measure will contribute to a safer driving experience. Following this phase, our teams will focus on completing the installation of streetlights along the remaining section of the road up to Namboole,” UNRA added.
