Rose Mary Kisembo, Executive Director of NIRA, announced plans to incorporate iris scans for biometric data in national ID registrations due to issues with fingerprint requirements. NIRA also utilizes facial recognition technology for data capture, addressing concerns raised in the Auditor General’s 2022/23 report before a parliamentary committee.

The National Identification Registrations Authority (NIRA) will start incorporating iris scans in capturing biometric data for individuals registering to acquire national IDs.

The Executive Director of NIRA, Rose Mary Kisembo, stated that there are currently 1 million people in the register whose fingerprints did not satisfy the requirements. However, the authority also uses facial recognition to capture biometric data.

Kisembo made these remarks while appearing before the Committee on Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises to address queries in the Auditor General’s report for 2022/23.
