The Secretary General of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), Richard Todwong, has articulated that the party is poised to formalize a cooperation agreement with Venezuela.
In a meeting held on Monday February 12, 2024 at the NRM secretariat in Kyadondo, a suburb of Kampala, with the envoy, Todwong expressed the intent for the NRM party to enter into a cooperation agreement with Venezuela, akin to those established with other nations or organizations, subsequent to the inauguration of the Venezuelan Embassy in Uganda last month.
Todwong emphasized the challenges faced by Venezuela, particularly amidst pressures from Western powers, notably the United States, including sanctions and blockades, prompting the South American nation to seek supportive alliances and understanding allies.
Highlighting Uganda’s significant role as the chair of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), Todwong underscored the nation’s commitment to assisting marginalized countries, thus positioning Uganda uniquely to extend assistance and advocacy.

On a domestic front, Todwong affirmed the NRM’s ongoing efforts to engage in cooperation agreements with Ugandan political parties, citing existing collaborations with the Democratic Party (DP) and the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC), alongside NRM’s leadership role within the Interparty Organisation for Dialogue (IPOD).
Todwong advocated for unity and constructive dialogue, emphasizing the importance of accommodating diverse viewpoints while maintaining mutual respect and national unity.
Additionally, Todwong highlighted the NRM’s international engagements, particularly with revolutionary parties and African blocs, as a testament to the party’s global relevance and commitment to serving the masses.
In response, Ambassador Juarez of Venezuela expressed eagerness to collaborate with Uganda, citing the need for partnerships in light of economic challenges exacerbated by sanctions.
