Pope Francis — the head of the Catholic Church has appointed Fr Dr Constantine Rupiny as the new bishop of Uganda’s Diocese of Nebbi Archbishop Luigi Bianco, the papal nuncio, made the announcement in a letter
Fr. Dr. Constantine Rupiny has been named the new bishop of the Diocese of Nebbi in Uganda by Pope Francis, the head of the Catholic Church. The papal nuncio, Archbishop Luigi Bianco, announced the news in a letter on Tuesday, November 26, 2024.
Fr Rupiny replaces 63-year-old Bishop Raphael p’Mony Wokorach, who was appointed as Archbishop of Gulu Archdiocese in March this year and installed in July.
“The Apostolic Nunciature congratulates the new bishop and invokes abundant blessings upon his pastoral ministry,” said Bianco in his letter.
Rupiny becomes the fifth bishop of Nebbi Diocese.
He follows in the footsteps of (starting with immediate predecessors) Wokorach, Sanctus Lino Wanok, Martin Luluga and John Baptist Odama.
“I have accepted it [role of bishop] with prayers of the people of God and help of God,” Rupiny told New Vision on phone.
He said seminarians at Uganda Martyrs’ Alokolum National Major Seminary in Gulu went looking for him to break the news to him.
“I received the news at 2:15pm while I was at the seminary.”
Created in 1996 from the Diocese of Arua, the Catholic Diocese of Nebbi is among 19 Catholic dioceses under the ecclesiastical province of Gulu.
It has 22 Catholic parishes and 65 diocesan priests, some working outside the diocese.
The diocese is now set to welcome its fifth bishop, Fr Rupiny, who was ordained priest on August 28, 2004.
The second-last born in a family of eight children, Rupiny has a doctorate in Dogmatic Theology from Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw, Poland.
He has served as rector of Uganda Martyrs’ Alokolum National Major Seminary in Gulu.
