President Yoweri Museveni has urged the people of Mubende District to focus on generating income from their homesteads, assuring them that infrastructure improvements, including tarmac roads and electricity, will follow. He made these remarks during the 39th anniversary celebration of the NRM/A liberation struggle at Mubende National Teachers’ College on January 26, 2025.

Speaking at the 39th anniversary celebration of the NRM/A liberation struggle at Mubende National Teachers’ College, the President emphasized the importance of economic empowerment at the household level. The event, themed “Salutations to Those Who Re-Sanctified Our Homeland,” was attended by First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Museveni.

Museveni highlighted that poverty eradication is achievable through government programs like the Parish Development Model (PDM). He explained that PDM provides capital at the parish level to support households in income-generating activities. The President also assured beneficiaries that they would not incur bank charges, as the government would cover these costs.

He urged local leaders to understand the needs of their communities and take stock of the homesteads in their villages. Museveni clarified that while infrastructure like roads, electricity, and healthcare are important, they do not directly lift people out of poverty.

Reflecting on Uganda’s economic journey, the President recognized the contributions of Mubende, Luweero, and Rwenzori in the 1981–1986 liberation struggle. He pointed out that after independence, only 9% of Ugandans participated in the money economy, with most relying on subsistence farming, a situation worsened during Idi Amin’s regime.

Museveni also highlighted Uganda’s progress towards a modern economy, citing advancements like Kiira Motors in Jinja. He revealed that in 2013, only 32% of Ugandans were involved in the money economy, which led to the creation of Operation Wealth Creation (OWC) to provide seedlings and livestock. After facing challenges, the government shifted to PDM, which allocates UGX 100 million per parish annually.

Through the four-acre model, farmers are encouraged to grow coffee, fruits, pasture for dairy cattle, food crops, and engage in backyard projects like poultry and piggery. Museveni shared success stories, such as that of Ijara Martin from Serere, to illustrate the program’s impact.

Minister for the Presidency, Babirye Milly Babalanda, praised Museveni’s leadership, noting his patience and strategic management as central to Uganda’s development.

During the event, 61 individuals were honored for their contributions to the country’s progress.

The 39th NRM/A anniversary celebration reaffirmed the government’s commitment to driving economic growth and prosperity for all Ugandans.
