President Museveni Commends Catholic Church for Combating Illiteracy in Kigezi
The Catholic Church has been praised by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for its important contribution to the fight against illiteracy in the Kigezi Sub-Region. Vice President Rtd. Maj. Jessica Alupo delivered the President’s speech at the centennial celebrations of Our Lady of Good Shepherd Rushoroza Cathedral Parish in Kabale Municipality yesterday 7th January 2024
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has commended the Catholic Church for its significant role in combating illiteracy in the Kigezi Sub-Region.
During the centenary celebrations of Our Lady of Good Shepherd Rushoroza Cathedral Parish in Kabale Municipality yesterday 7th January 2024, Vice President Rtd. Maj. Jessica Alupo conveyed the President’s speech, highlighting the White Fathers’ arrival in 1909 at Nyarushanje and their impact on Education
The ceremony, graced by dignitaries, commenced with a Mass led by H.E. Luigi Bianco, Papal Nuncio to Uganda assisted by Bishop of Kabale Diocese, Rt Rev Callist Rubaramira.
President Museveni congratulated Rushoroza Cathedral Parish for its 100 years, recognizing the Catholic faith’s foundational role in spiritual, moral, and material transformation in Kigezi and health centers in Kigezi.
President Museveni urged religious leaders to mobilize Christians for the NRM government’s wealth campaign. He donated Shs. 50 million to the Cathedral’s renovation, and Maj. Alupo contributed Shs. 15 million.
Finance Minister (General Duties) Henry Musasizi Ariganyira expressed gratitude to President Museveni for financial support to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal Fund and road construction. Minister Musasizi announced the successful distribution of 99% of PDM Funds.
Minister of state for Trade, industry and Co-operatives David Bahati commended Bishop Rubaramira for inclusivity. In his homily, Bishop Rubaramira emphasized the centenary as a symbol of gratitude and urged Christians to renew their faith, be messengers of God, and let His light shine in their lives.
Rushoroza cathedral parish, was established in 1923, and it’s the first Catholic parish in Kigezi, now serving as the seat for Kabale Catholic Diocese covering the entire Kigezi region.
