President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has launched the Jinja Airfield upgrading project aimed at improving regional connectivity, boosting tourism, and enhancing trade.
Speaking at the launch, President Museveni highlighted the airfield’s strategic importance in positioning Jinja as a key transportation hub. “Constructing and expanding the airfield is logical. It will enable tourists to reach their destinations on time and ease transportation for both people and goods,” he said.
The project, led by Gofar Investment and MJ Engineers and Contractors, involves upgrading the runway, taxiway, and apron to international standards. Construction began in 2024 and is expected to be completed in 15 months.
President Museveni noted Uganda’s progress since 1986, emphasizing the government’s commitment to expanding infrastructure. He outlined plans to improve airfields, rehabilitate railway stations, and introduce water transport to ease road congestion and reduce accidents. He also revealed plans to establish an international airport in Kidepo National Park to attract high-value tourists.
The Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga, First Deputy Prime Minister, requested an additional 10 acres of land to expand the airfield and accommodate future growth. She noted that the people of Jinja have long dreamed of an international airport, and this project brings them closer to that goal.
Fred Byamukama, State Minister for Works and Transport, said the upgrade would address challenges tourists face traveling from Kampala to Jinja by road. He assured the public of the government’s commitment to completing the project on time.
The government has allocated UGX 23 billion through the Ministry of Works and Transport for the airfield’s development.
The launch ceremony was attended by government officials, Members of Parliament, aviation officers, and local leaders.
