President Museveni Orders State Funeral for Deceased Supreme Court Judge, Justice Stella Arach-Amoko

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni ordered that Stella Arach-Amoko, a deceased Supreme Court judge, receive a state funeral. The Minister for the Presidency, Honourable Babirye Milly Babalanda, stated yesterday on Sunday 18th June 2023.

“H.E. the President ordered that a state funeral be held for the deceased Justice Stella Arach-Amoko. The entire burial schedule will be announced. The funeral for Justice Arach-Amoko will take place on Saturday, June 24th, 2023.

On 18th June 2023, the minister added, “On behalf of the N.O.C, I wish to declare that the government is handling the burial arrangements for deceased Justice Stella Arach-Amoko. Condolences to the family, the judicial system, and all Ugandans. MHSRIEP.”

At around 4:00 a.m. Tuesday 13th June 2023, Justice Arach- Amoko, 69, passed away in Nakasero Hospital. Richard Buteera, the Deputy Chief Justice, verified the terrible news.

“The family of the late Hon. Justice Stella Arach Amoko, the judiciary, the legal community, the nation, and the whole East African area are all recipients of our heartfelt condolences. Justice Buteera stated, “The Judiciary has lost an amazing jurist who has been a champion of Justice.

In 2013, Arach was appointed to the position of Justice of the Supreme Court, which she held until her passing.

Previously employed at the Attorney General’s Office as a State Attorney, she progressed through the ranks to become a commissioner for civil litigation between 1979 and 1997.

Before being promoted to the Court of Appeal, she spent 13 years (1997–2010) serving as a judge on the High court. She has previously worked as a judge at the East African Court of Justice from 2006 to 2008 and as a deputy senior judge of the First Instance Division from 2008 to 2013.

Arach applied to be the Chief Justice of Uganda in 2010, and the Judicial Service Commission took his application into consideration. Arach-Amoko presided over the Law Development Centre of Uganda’s nine-member Management Committee from April 15, 2018, to April 14, 2020.
