President Museveni Reaffirms Commitment To Russia-Ukraine Peace Process
While participating in a virtual meeting hosted by President Cyril Ramaphosa, the president of the Republic of South Africa, at State House Nakasero, President Yoweri Museveni pledged his support and commitment to the peace process on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine crisis.
President Yoweri Museveni emphasized that the two countries (Russia and Ukraine) could benefit from the African perspective on how problems are solved.
“This war affects all of us and it can get worse than it is now. It is threatening world peace. Since we have our own perspective, we can share with them how we have solved our own problems here” he said.
“I think Africa has good credentials in solving problems, like that of South Africa (Apartheid), Congo, Somalia, etc”, he added.
President Museveni mentioned how the Conflict has impacted Africa, pointing out the sanctions that have harmed, among other things, banking and marine transportation.
He expressed his gratitude to the Republic of South Africa and the meeting’s organizers for organizing the gathering to talk about how Africa was contributing to the situation.
President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa, who hosted the virtual meeting, commended African presidents for setting aside time to talk about Africa’s role in resolving the Russia-Ukraine crisis, noting that their goal as African heads of state is to ensure that both Russia and Ukraine engage in meaningful negotiations that will put an end to the Conflict.
He stated that as head of states from Africa, it is their responsibility to ensure that Russia and Ukraine participate in productive negotiations that will put an end to the Conflict.
“We need to confirm that we are embarking on this mission as Pan African leaders and we desire peace” he said.
Presidents of the African Union (AU), the Union of Comoros, Macky Sall of Senegal, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi of Egypt, Denis Sassou Nguesso of Congo Brazzaville, and Zambia’s Hakainde Hichilema also attended the summit.
The chiefs of state from Africa are planning a trip to Russia and Ukraine to explore a possible peace proposal to end the conflict.
