President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has resolved a protracted land dispute in Kyaka South County, Kyegegwa District. This is aimed at ensuring the residents on the contested land in Kyaka I are not displaced. Addressing a large gathering at Rwentuha Primary School in Kyaka South, Museveni assured the locals that the government would relocate plans for an industrial park and an avocado factory to Kyaka II, leaving them to retain their land.

The disputed area, which covers Kyaka I, Kazinga Town Council, Rwentuha, and Migamba Sub-Counties, had been earmarked for industrial development. Museveni explained that the establishment of industrial parks in other regions, such as Namanve and Mbale, had significantly benefited communities through job creation and access to local markets.

“I understand that people made a mistake by encroaching on government land. However, we are committed to making sure no one loses their home,” Museveni reassured the residents, urging them to refrain from future land encroachment and respect designated areas like wetlands and forests to protect the environment.

In a move to boost the local economy, the President encouraged farmers to adopt modern farming methods, including growing avocados for the planned factory in Kyaka II and planting pasture to improve milk production. He pledged government support through tractors to phase out free-range grazing, which he argued limits productivity.

The President also promised to tarmac the Liberation Road to enhance infrastructure but emphasized the need for the community to focus on increasing household incomes. He donated UGX 50 million to the District Leaders’ SACCO and vowed to engage experts in adding value to local produce, particularly bananas.

Kyaka South MP Jackson Kafuuzi praised the President for ending the long-standing dispute, expressing optimism that the matter was now resolved permanently. Kyegegwa District LCV Chairperson John Kisoke Byamukama highlighted that over 130,000 people live on the disputed land, making their eviction unjust, given the area’s development with schools, health centers, and churches.

The event attracted notable attendees, including Members of Parliament, Resident District Commissioners, and religious leaders.
