Over 60 medals are set to be awarded by His Excellency President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni during the 39th National Resistance Army/Movement (NRA/M) Liberation Day celebrations.

The national event, to be presided over by the President, will take place in Mubende District on January 26, 2025, under the theme: “39 Years of NRM/A: Salutations to Those Who Re-Sanctified Our Homeland.”

While addressing journalists at the Uganda Media Centre in Kampala on January 22, 2025, the Minister of State for Kampala Affairs, Hon. Kabuye Kyoffatogabye, outlined the various activities planned to commemorate the day. These include a health camp where over 600 eyeglasses are expected to be donated to those in need.

Hon. Kyoffatogabye highlighted the significant impact of peace and security brought about by the NRM government, stating, “The peace and security ushered in by the NRM government have made a tangible and positive difference in the lives of our people. Uganda now has a system of laws and institutions that guarantee justice for all, creating an environment that gives Ugandans the confidence to pursue their potential.”

The Minister emphasized that the liberation was a monumental sacrifice worth celebrating by all Ugandans. He remarked, “It was a great sacrifice by every individual who dreamt of achieving victory against oppressive regimes. As Ugandans, we celebrate this day as an inspiration for total liberation.”

He further noted the broader significance of Uganda’s liberation, saying, “The story of our liberation is historically linked to other struggles on the continent due to the commonalities and kinship we share. Sustainable socio-economic transformation cannot be achieved in isolation or without addressing issues of shared concern, just as seen in other African liberation efforts.”

According to Hon. Kyoffatogabye, Uganda’s economy has experienced substantial growth since January 26, 1986, when the NRA/M captured Kampala. He stated that the economy has expanded fivefold, growing from $1.5 billion in 1986 to $55 billion today.
